Senior Staff Nurse – Deputy Ward Manager (Older Peoples Services)

About the role

The NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse to step into a Deputy Ward Manager role within Older Peoples Services at Vale of Leven Hospital. This position blends direct patient care with leadership duties, supporting high‑quality, person‑centred services while developing the nursing team.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Ward Manager with day‑to‑day leadership and operational management of the ward.
• Lead, coordinate and evaluate evidence‑based nursing care for a defined patient group.
• Supervise, support and develop registered nurses, healthcare support workers and learners.
• Contribute to staff rostering, manage sickness absence and support workforce planning.
• Participate in recruitment, appraisal processes and personal development planning.
• Promote a positive, inclusive environment for patients, families, carers and colleagues.
• Ensure effective use of resources, equipment and clinical systems while maintaining professional standards.

Required profile

• First‑level Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.
• Post‑registration nursing experience, preferably in older peoples services.
• Relevant post‑registration qualification or equivalent experience within the specialty.
• Demonstrable clinical expertise and ability to deliver safe, effective patient care.
• Strong leadership and people‑management experience.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to use sound judgement, work independently and contribute to service improvement.
