Legal Counsel

About the role

Russell Investments is seeking a Legal Counsel to join its newly‑opened Mumbai office. The role will be part of the global legal team and will focus on drafting, negotiating and managing commercial contracts that support the firm’s investment and trading activities.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, negotiate and execute investment management agreements and related contracts with money managers across multiple jurisdictions.
• Identify and mitigate legal, regulatory and contractual risks associated with commercial agreements.
• Maintain and update legal templates to reflect current fiduciary duties, compliance requirements, termination rights and changes in applicable rules.
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders—including investment, compliance, operations and legal teams—to ensure contracts meet business and risk standards.
• Provide subject‑matter expertise on legal issues related to money‑manager contracts.

Required profile

• 4‑6 years of experience at a major law firm and/or in‑house legal department, primarily handling commercial agreements.
• Law degree from a recognised university.
• Strong judgment and ability to work closely with global internal stakeholders.

Required skills

• Contract drafting and negotiation.
• Knowledge of investment management agreements and related regulatory frameworks.
• Ability to update and maintain legal templates.
