Welding Engineer

About the role

The Welding Engineer will lead weld repair activities on steel castings, ensuring compliance with customer specifications, international codes and internal quality standards. The role focuses on minimizing repair rates and achieving first‑time acceptance through rigorous planning, supervision and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare, qualify and maintain Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) and Welder Qualification Records (WPQ) in accordance with ASME Section IX and customer requirements.
• Plan and supervise weld repairs on carbon steel, stainless steel, duplex, super duplex and nickel alloy castings.
• Review radiographic (RT), ultrasonic (UT), penetrant (PT), magnetic particle (MT) and visual (VT) inspection reports and define appropriate repair procedures.
• Coordinate with foundry, heat‑treatment, machining and quality teams to ensure timely completion of repair welding.
• Monitor pre‑heating, inter‑pass temperature, post‑weld heat treatment (PWHT) and welding consumable storage and usage.
• Conduct root‑cause analysis of welding defects and implement corrective and preventive actions.
• Train, qualify and monitor welders to improve productivity and weld quality.
• Maintain complete welding documentation for customer inspections and audits.
• Support customer, third‑party inspection (TPI) and regulatory inspections related to welding activities.
• Drive continuous‑improvement initiatives to reduce weld repair rates and improve first‑pass acceptance.

Required profile

• B.E./B.Tech. or Diploma in Mechanical, Metallurgical or Welding Engineering.
• 3–10 years of experience in a steel casting foundry or heavy‑engineering environment.
• Experience with pump castings, duplex and super‑duplex stainless steels, and pressure‑containing components is preferred.
• Relevant certifications such as CSWIP 3.1/3.2, IWE/IWT, AWS‑CWI are advantageous.

• Knowledge of ASME Section IX requirements.
• Interpretation of RT, UT, PT, MT and VT inspection reports.
• Control of pre‑heating, inter‑pass temperature and post‑weld heat treatment (PWHT).
• Welding consumable selection and storage management.
• Root‑cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
• Welder training, qualification and performance monitoring.
• Familiarity with CSWIP, IWE/IWT and AWS‑CWI certification standards.
