Subject Matter Expert Payments Operations

About the role

The Subject Matter Expert – Payments Operations will provide expert guidance and ensure operational accuracy across Australian domestic and international payment workflows. You will work within ANZ’s Group Operations team, supporting complex transactions, risk mitigation, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Act as the SME for Australian payment systems such as BECS, NPP, SWIFT, MIP and RTGS.
• Resolve complex transaction issues, payment exceptions, escalations and reconciliation discrepancies.
• Monitor operational performance, identify error trends and conduct root‑cause analysis to improve efficiency.
• Ensure compliance with APRA, AML/CTF and other regulatory requirements.
• Support audit, risk management and control testing activities.
• Develop and maintain SOPs, process documentation and training materials.
• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to drive automation and strategic transformation projects.

Required profile

• 3‑5 years of experience in payments, transaction processing, banking operations, fintech or corporate treasury.
• Strong understanding of Australian payment platforms and end‑to‑end processing cycles.
• Knowledge of regulatory and compliance frameworks, including APRA and AML/CTF.
• Proven ability to analyse data, identify trends and implement process improvements.
