Staff Nurse – Intensive Care Unit (ICU/HDU)

About the role

The NHS Borders Critical Care Unit is seeking a Band 5 Staff Nurse to provide safe, effective, and compassionate care to critically ill patients in a combined 9‑bed ICU/HDU. This is a 12‑month fixed‑term internal vacancy for current NHS Scotland staff.

Key responsibilities

• Care for critically ill patients with a variety of medical, surgical and trauma conditions.
• Work closely with a multidisciplinary team including doctors, allied health professionals, pharmacists and support workers.
• Develop and apply expert assessment, monitoring and clinical decision‑making skills.
• Provide advanced organ support under supervision and mentorship.
• Contribute to service development, quality improvement and maintain high professional standards.

Required profile

• Registered Nurse (Adult) with first‑level registration.
• Genuine interest in critical care nursing.
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
• Motivation, enthusiasm and willingness to learn in a fast‑paced environment.
• Commitment to NHS values and high‑quality patient care.
• Previous acute or critical care experience is beneficial but not essential.
