Staff Nurse – Intensive Care Unit (ICU/HDU)

About the role

We are looking for a Band 5 Staff Nurse to join the Intensive Care Unit/High Dependency Unit at NHS Borders. The role is a 12‑month fixed‑term position supporting critically ill adults in a 9‑bed combined ICU/HDU environment.

Key responsibilities

• Provide safe, effective and compassionate care to patients with Level 1‑3 critical illnesses.
• Work closely with doctors, allied health professionals, pharmacists and support staff as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Develop and apply expert assessment, monitoring and clinical decision‑making skills.
• Deliver advanced organ support and contribute to patient‑centred care plans.
• Participate in service development, quality‑improvement projects and maintain high professional standards.

Required profile

• Registered Adult Nurse (Band 5) with a genuine interest in critical care.
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
• Motivated, enthusiastic and eager to learn in a fast‑paced environment.
• Commitment to NHS values of compassion, kindness, integrity, teamwork and excellence.
• Previous acute or critical‑care experience is beneficial but not essential.

• Advanced organ support.
