Staff Nurse – Border Stroke & Palliative Ward (Band 5)

About the role

This permanent Band 5 position is for an Adult Registered General Nurse (RGN) to join the Border Stroke Unit and the Margaret Kerr Palliative Ward. The role offers 23 hours per week across a mix of day, night and weekend shifts, supporting patients through acute stroke rehabilitation and end‑of‑life care.

Key responsibilities

• Provide direct nursing care to stroke patients on a 14‑bed unit, including post‑thrombectomy monitoring.
• Deliver compassionate palliative care on the 8‑bed Margaret Kerr ward, managing complex symptoms and supporting families.
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to develop and implement person‑centred care plans.
• Adapt quickly to a variable workload and respond to changing patient needs.
• Participate in training and continuous professional development opportunities.

Required profile

• Qualified Adult RGN, currently employed by NHS Scotland.
• Experience in, or strong interest in, stroke rehabilitation or palliative care.
• Ability to work flexibly across nights, days and weekends.
• Commitment to NHS values of compassion, kindness, integrity, teamwork and excellence.

Required skills

• Clinical assessment and monitoring of stroke patients.
• Symptom management for palliative care patients.
• Effective communication within a multidisciplinary team.
