Staff Nurse – Band 5 – Stroke & Palliative Care

About the role

We are seeking a Band 5 Staff Nurse to join the Border Stroke and Margaret Kerr units within NHS Borders. The post offers 23 hours per week across day, night and weekend shifts, providing care for stroke patients undergoing rehabilitation and for palliative‑care patients with complex needs.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver person‑centred nursing care on a 14‑bed stroke unit, including post‑thrombectomy patients.
• Provide holistic symptom management and end‑of‑life support on the 8‑bed Margaret Kerr palliative ward.
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to plan and review patient care plans.
• Adapt quickly to a varied and unpredictable workload, ensuring safety and quality standards.
• Participate in training and continuous professional development activities.

Required profile

• Current NHS Scotland employee.
• Adult Registered General Nurse (RGN) with a Band 5 contract.
• Experience in, or a strong interest in, stroke or palliative care.
• Ability to work flexibly across nights, days and weekends.
• Commitment to the NHS values of compassion, kindness, integrity, teamwork and excellence.
