Software Engineer (R) – Data Visualization & Analytics

About the role

Mastercard’s Economics Institute is seeking an R‑focused Software Engineer to join its Data Systems Engineering team. You will help turn anonymised transaction data into compelling economic insights for a global audience.

Key responsibilities

• Create clear, compelling data visualisations that communicate economic insights.
• Develop reusable R functions, packages and automated workflows.
• Produce analytical reports using R Markdown or Quarto.
• Design and build scalable Shiny applications.
• Implement interactive visualisations with JavaScript charting libraries (e.g., Plotly, Highcharts, D3.js) or front‑end frameworks such as React, Angular or Vue.js.
• Work with databases and big‑data platforms (SQL, Hadoop) to extract and transform data.
• Maintain well‑documented, version‑controlled code using Git.

Required profile

• Proficient in R and the RStudio/Positron IDE.
• Experienced with R packages for data manipulation (e.g., dplyr) and documentation (roxygen2).
• Comfortable with Git workflows and collaborative development.
• Strong SQL skills and familiarity with relational databases.
• Creative, detail‑oriented and able to work both independently and within cross‑functional teams.
