Sewer Maintenance Worker II (Equipment Operator)

About the role

The City of Cambridge is seeking a Sewer Maintenance Worker II (Equipment Operator) to inspect, repair, and maintain the municipal sewer system, including storm drains, force mains, lift stations, and manholes. This full‑time, onsite position involves heavy physical labor and operation of specialized construction equipment to keep the city's underground infrastructure functioning safely and efficiently.

Key responsibilities

• Inspect and diagnose problems in sewer lines, storm drains, force mains, lift stations, and manholes.
• Perform pipe repairs, installations, cleaning, and flushing of mains.
• Isolate breaks and conduct emergency repairs to restore service.
• Operate construction equipment such as jackhammers, hydraulic tools, and other heavy‑duty machinery.
• Landscape and secure work sites to ensure safety and compliance.
• Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and equipment operated.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED.
• Minimum four years of experience in sewer maintenance or a closely related field.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to regularly lift 50‑75 lb and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Willingness to work in noisy, hazardous environments and follow safety protocols.
