Public Utilities Operator I

About the role

The City of Devils Lake is seeking a Public Utilities Operator I to support the daily operation and maintenance of its stormwater, wastewater, flood protection, and drinking water systems. This full‑time position includes night and weekend on‑call duties and offers the opportunity to work within a dedicated public works team.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in operating, maintaining, and repairing stormwater, wastewater, and flood protection infrastructure.
• Support the drinking water system operation and maintenance when required.
• Perform wastewater sampling and testing according to established procedures.
• Respond to on‑call emergencies during nights and weekends.
• Maintain accurate records of system performance and maintenance activities.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Highly organized, detail‑oriented, and effective communicator.
• Ability to build collaborative relationships with peers, supervisors, other city departments, and the public.
• 2+ years of experience in public works or related utilities operations preferred.

Required skills

• Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements (or ability to obtain within one year).
• Class I Water Operator Certification (or ability to obtain within three years).
• Class I Wastewater Operator Certification (or ability to obtain within three years).
• Working knowledge of wastewater collection/treatment and stormwater equipment.
