Principal Engineer, Search Platform

About the role

Atlassian is hiring a Principal Engineer for its Search Platform, working remotely from India. You will act as a technical leader for the core indexing engines and enterprise-grade trust capabilities behind Atlassian Search and Rovo, leading the technical vision, architecture and delivery of planetary-scale data ingestion and indexing platforms. The role ensures Search meets strict enterprise commitments across multi-cloud (GCP/AWS), isolated cloud, compliance and encryption.

Key responsibilities

• Own the technical strategy and delivery for enterprise requirements such as multi-cloud (GCP/AWS), Isolated Cloud, FedRAMP, BYOK encryption and data residency.
• Evolving high-throughput, low-latency distributed indexing pipelines to meet the retrieval needs of agentic and AI use cases.
• Work across ML, Data, Cloud Infrastructure and product teams, aligning technical direction, unblocking dependencies and building shared platform capabilities.
• Improve ingestion throughput, data freshness and reliability while optimizing unit economics through smarter sharding, disaggregated storage and compute efficiency.
• Stay ahead of retrieval architectures, vector/hybrid indexing and agentic memory patterns to accelerate the platform and product roadmap.

Required profile

• 12+ years of experience delivering enterprise-grade requirements such as tenant isolation, multi-cloud deployments, compliance frameworks (FedRAMP, BYOK, data residency) and zero-downtime migrations at scale.
• Proven experience designing and operating large-scale distributed data pipelines, search/indexing systems or streaming platforms.
• Experience driving alignment and delivery across multiple teams and systems.
• A track record of making fast, pragmatic trade-offs that deliver near-term value without accumulating technical debt.
• Familiarity with systems that support AI agents and safe agentic engineering practices.

Required skills

• Distributed data pipelines and streaming platforms (e.g. Kafka, Flink)
• Search and indexing systems (e.g. OpenSearch/Elasticsearch, object-store-backed indexing, vector search)
