Patient Care Assistant – Surgery Unit

About the role

We are seeking a Patient Care Assistant to join the Surgery Unit at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. The role provides direct patient care under the supervision of the Team Leader, supporting registered nurses on a day shift. This full‑time position involves hands‑on assistance with activities of daily living and technical tasks.

Key responsibilities

• Take and record vital signs, weight, height, and intake‑output measurements.
• Encourage patients to turn, cough, use incentive spirometry, and ambulate as directed.
• Assist patients with bed transfers, wheelchair mobility, and positioning.
• Provide personal care such as bathing, oral hygiene, dressing, and linen changes.
• Empty and document drains, canisters, urine bags, bedpans and emesis basins.
• Collect urine, stool, sputum and other specimens as ordered.
• Perform phlebotomy and label specimens using two patient identifiers.
• Conduct EKGs after special training.
• Assist with range‑of‑motion exercises and use of ambulatory devices.
• Maintain a safe environment by reporting equipment issues and handling supplies appropriately.

Required profile

• Direct patient caregiver able to work under the supervision of a Team Leader.
• Willingness to perform hands‑on care and specified technical tasks for multiple patients.
• Ability to respond promptly to patient call lights and requests.
• Comfort with maintaining accurate documentation of measurements and specimen collection.
