Patient Care Assistant – Neuroscience Unit (Night Shift)

About the role

The Patient Care Assistant works on the Neuroscience Unit of Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, providing direct bedside support to patients during night shifts. Reporting to the Team Leader, you will assist registered nurses with hands‑on care, vital‑sign monitoring, and basic technical tasks.

Key responsibilities

• Record temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight, height, and intake‑output measurements.
• Encourage patients to turn, cough, use incentive spirometry, and perform deep‑breathing exercises as ordered.
• Assist patients with ambulation, transfers, and transportation as needed.
• Provide personal care including bed baths, oral hygiene, dressing, linen changes, and bedside environment upkeep.
• Empty and document drains, canisters, urine bags, bedpans, and emesis basins.
• Collect urine, stool, and sputum specimens and perform phlebotomy and EKG when trained.
• Maintain a safe environment by reporting equipment issues and handling supplies appropriately.
• Respond promptly to call lights and patient requests.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent; CNA certification preferred.
• Ability to work night shifts and perform physically demanding tasks.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow care plans.
• Effective communication skills for interacting with patients and the care team.

Required skills

• Phlebotomy (additional training required)
• Electrocardiogram (EKG) performance (special training required)
