Patient Care Assistant – Neuroscience Unit

About the role

The Patient Care Assistant provides direct bedside support to patients in the Neuroscience Unit, working under the supervision of the Team Leader and registered nurses. This full‑time, day‑shift position involves hands‑on care, assistance with activities of daily living, and execution of specific technical tasks.

Key responsibilities

• Measure and record vital signs, intake‑output, weight, and height.
• Encourage and assist patients with turning, coughing, deep breathing, and incentive spirometry.
• Assist with ambulation, transfers, and transportation to wheelchairs.
• Provide personal care such as bed baths, oral hygiene, dressing, and linen changes.
• Manage drainage devices, urine bags, bedpans, and record outputs.
• Maintain a safe environment by reporting equipment issues and handling supplies.
• Perform basic wound care, apply/remove abdominal binders, anti‑embolism stockings, and compression devices.
• Collect specimens, perform range‑of‑motion exercises, and assist with ambulatory devices.
• Conduct phlebotomy and EKG procedures after appropriate training.
• Respond promptly to call lights and patient requests.

Required profile

• Ability to work under direct supervision of nursing staff.
• Willingness to serve as a sitter for patients requiring constant observation.
• Physical capability to lift, turn, and reposition patients safely.
• Commitment to maintaining patient safety and confidentiality.

Required skills

• Phlebotomy (trained)
• Electrocardiogram (EKG) performance (trained)
