Patient Care Assistant – Nephrology Unit

About the role

The Patient Care Assistant works on the Nephrology Unit of Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, providing direct bedside care under the supervision of the Team Leader and registered nurses. This full‑time, day‑shift position supports patients with daily living activities, vital sign monitoring, and specific technical tasks.

Key responsibilities

• Measure and record temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight, height, and intake‑output.
• Encourage patients to turn, cough, use incentive spirometry, and perform deep‑breathing exercises.
• Assist patients with ambulation, transfers, wheelchair use, and transport as needed.
• Provide personal care including bed baths, oral hygiene, dressing, linen changes, and bedside environment upkeep.
• Empty and document drains, canisters, urine bags, bedpans, and emesis basins.
• Collect urine, stool, and sputum specimens and perform phlebotomy with proper labeling.
• Conduct EKGs after specialized training and maintain lab‑draw supplies.
• Assist with range‑of‑motion exercises, use of ambulatory devices, and application/removal of compression stockings.
• Respond promptly to call lights and patient requests, reporting any safety or equipment concerns.

Required profile

• Direct patient caregiver able to work under the supervision of a Team Leader and RN.
• Comfortable performing hands‑on care, ADL assistance, and technical tasks.
• Willingness to obtain additional training for phlebotomy and EKG procedures.
• Commitment to maintaining a safe and clean patient environment.
