Patient Care Assistant

About the role

The Patient Care Assistant works on the Nephrology Unit of Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, providing direct bedside care under the supervision of the Team Leader and registered nurses. This part‑time, day‑shift position involves assisting patients with activities of daily living and specified technical tasks.

Key responsibilities

• Take and record temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight, height, and intake‑output measurements.
• Encourage patients to turn, cough, use incentive spirometry, and perform deep‑breathing exercises.
• Ambulate patients, assist with transfers, and transport when needed.
• Provide nutritional support, distribute meal trays, and assist with feeding.
• Deliver morning or evening care including bed baths, oral hygiene, dressing, linen changes, and bedside cleaning.
• Empty drains, canisters, urine bags, bedpans, and record outputs.
• Maintain a safe environment by reporting equipment issues and handling supplies properly.
• Assist with positioning, lifting, pre‑operative support, and application/removal of abdominal binders, anti‑embolism stockings, and sequential compression devices.
• Empty and clean ostomy bags, collect urine, stool, and sputum specimens.
• Perform range‑of‑motion assistance and help with ambulatory devices as ordered.
• Perform phlebotomy with proper labeling and maintain lab‑draw supplies.
• Perform EKGs as required.
• Promptly answer call lights and respond to patient requests.

Required profile

• Functions as a direct patient caregiver assisting registered nurses.
• Provides hands‑on care and assistance with activities of daily living.
• Works under the supervision of a Team Leader and may serve as a sitter for patients needing full‑time supervision.

Required skills

• Phlebotomy (additional training required).
• Electrocardiogram (EKG) performance (special training required).
• Vital signs measurement.
• Specimen collection (urine, stool, sputum).
• Range‑of‑motion assistance.
• Ambulation assistance.
• Use of incentive spirometry.
• Ostomy bag care.
