Patient Care Assistant – Cardiology Unit (Night Shift)

About the role

The Patient Care Assistant works on the Cardiology Unit of Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center during night shifts. Reporting to the Team Leader, the assistant provides direct bedside care, supports registered nurses, and ensures patient safety and comfort.

Key responsibilities

• Measure and record vital signs, intake‑output, weight, and other clinical data.
• Assist patients with activities of daily living, ambulation, positioning, and use of mobility devices.
• Provide bedside care such as bathing, oral hygiene, dressing, and linen changes.
• Manage nutritional needs, distribute meals, and monitor fluid intake.
• Empty and document drainage systems, urine bags, bedpans, and emesis basins.
• Perform phlebotomy and EKG testing after required training.
• Collect specimens (urine, stool, sputum) as ordered.
• Respond promptly to call lights and patient requests.
• Maintain a safe environment by reporting equipment issues and handling supplies properly.

Required profile

• Ability to work under the supervision of a Team Leader and registered nurses.
• Strong attention to detail for accurate documentation.
• Physical stamina to assist with patient lifting, turning, and transport.
• Commitment to patient safety and confidentiality.

Required skills

• Phlebotomy (trained)
• EKG operation (trained)
• Vital signs measurement
• Use of incentive spirometry and other respiratory support devices
