Nursing Superintendent (Senior Nursing Leader)

About the role

The Nursing Superintendent leads the nursing department of a multi‑specialty hospital, overseeing Labour Room, Postnatal, Gynecology, IVF, NICU and Advanced Maternal Care units. This senior position ensures the highest quality of patient care, staff discipline, and compliance with accreditation standards.

Key responsibilities

• Direct daily nursing operations across labour, postnatal, gynecology, NICU, OT and emergency units.
• Plan manpower, create duty rosters, manage leaves and emergency coverage to meet mandated nurse‑to‑patient ratios.
• Maintain supplies, equipment, and medication stocks for maternal and neonatal care.
• Enforce NABH/JCI standards, SOPs, and infection‑control protocols in partnership with the Infection Control Committee.
• Monitor clinical indicators such as pressure sores, catheter‑associated UTIs, medication errors, neonatal infection rates and KMC compliance.
• Handle patient grievances related to nursing and maternity services.
• Participate in recruitment, onboarding, competency assessments and performance appraisals for nursing staff.
• Organise continuous nursing education, lactation counselling, and emergency simulation drills.
• Coordinate with medical, HR, admin and facilities teams to ensure seamless documentation in physical records and the Hospital Information System (HIS).

Required profile

• B.Sc or M.Sc in Nursing (GNM with relevant experience considered).
• Certification in Obstetric or Neonatal Nursing preferred.
• 12‑15 years of progressive nursing experience, including leadership roles in maternity and neonatal care.

Required skills

• Knowledge of NABH and JCI accreditation standards.
• Proficiency with Hospital Information System (HIS) documentation.
• Expertise in infection‑control procedures and biomedical waste management.
