Mechanical Engineer

About the role

Applied Materials is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to design, develop and qualify mechanical solutions for semiconductor equipment. You will leverage physics, mathematics and materials science to create custom tooling, integrate robots and AGVs, and ensure reliable handling of wafer‑transfer assemblies throughout the product life‑cycle.

Key responsibilities

• Define and own the mechanical package, including mobile platform integration, robot mounting structures, FOUP load port and enclosure design.
• Select robots and end‑effectors, perform kinematics, reach and payload studies, and resolve hand‑off requirements with the tool team.
• Develop docking and auto‑levelling mechanisms with vibration control during the docking sequence.
• Engineer airflow enclosures and cleanliness‑compliant structures for wafer‑handling environments.
• Run structural, modal, vibration and thermal FEA across chassis, robot mounts and mechanical interfaces, closing design gaps before build release.
• Produce large‑assembly 3D models and GD&T‑controlled drawings in NX, Inventor or SolidWorks, maintaining full PDM/PLM discipline.
• Drive DFM/DFA reviews, own the BOM and support supplier selection, quotations and long‑lead procurement.
• Lead prototype build, assembly, debug and qualification of docking, levelling, battery/charging integration and throughput through to tool deployment.

Required profile

• B.E./B.Tech or M.E./M.Tech in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering.
• 8–12 years of experience in semiconductor capital equipment, robotics or factory automation.
• Proven ownership of at least one system from concept through prototype build to deployment.
• Effective cross‑functional collaboration with electrical, controls/software, safety and tool‑integration teams.

Required skills

• Industrial robot integration, kinematics analysis and end‑effector design.
• AGV chassis integration covering drive, navigation, battery and charging.
• Wafer‑handling environment design and cleanliness compliance.
• Finite element analysis (FEA) for structural, modal, vibration and thermal simulations.
• Geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5.
• CAD modeling in NX, Inventor or SolidWorks with drawing release.
• Design for manufacturability (DFM) and assembly (DFA), BOM management and supplier procurement.
