Mechanical Design Engineer – Drone Project

About the role

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the development of docking and deployment systems for a government‑funded drone project. You will work within a multidisciplinary team to integrate mechanical solutions into a mobile Ground Control Station vehicle, ensuring robust performance in field conditions.

Key responsibilities

• Conceptualise, design and develop drone docking bays, equipment racks and power distribution frameworks for a mobile GCS vehicle.
• Perform structural, kinematic and vibration analyses (FEA) to validate stability, weight distribution and durability.
• Lead physical mapping, mounting, hardware alignment and assembly of custom mechanical components, collaborating with workshop technicians and external fabricators.
• Coordinate with electronics, electrical and software teams to ensure seamless integration, thermal management and environmental shielding.
• Ensure all designs comply with safety standards, regulatory guidelines and institute quality norms.
• Produce comprehensive technical documentation, including high‑fidelity CAD drawings and detailed design specifications.

Required profile

• B.Tech/M.Tech or equivalent in Mechanical or Automobile Engineering.
• Minimum 3 years of professional experience in machine design, heavy structural development and vehicle customisation.
• Proven hands‑on experience with chassis/body integration, layout optimisation and automotive fabrication techniques.

Required skills

• SolidWorks (3D CAD modelling).
• Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and kinematic design verification.
• Material science, welding, sheet‑metal work and CNC processing.
• Manufacturing process planning and scalability.
• Component fitting, electromechanical system integration and hardware mounting.
