Manager AI/ML Engineering

About the role

Optum, part of UnitedHealth Group, is hiring a Manager AI/ML Engineering in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The role focuses on building conversational and agentic AI platforms, including voice bots and chatbots, and on orchestrating AI agents. The position is open to candidates with a graduate degree or equivalent experience.

Key responsibilities

• Build voice bots and chat bots, and develop and orchestrate agentic AI applications
• Implement intent modeling, conversation design, prompt engineering and NLU concepts
• Develop LLM applications with tool calling, function calling and agent workflows
• Comply with company policies, procedures and business directives, including changes to work location, team assignments, schedules and flexible work arrangements

Required profile

• Graduate degree or equivalent experience
• Hands-on experience building production-grade Generative AI applications with Amazon Bedrock
• Experience developing and orchestrating AI agents with Bedrock AgentCore and AWS Strands
• Experience with LLM orchestration frameworks, tool integrations and multi-agent workflows
• Experience securing enterprise AI agents (guardrails, prompt injection mitigation, data protection, access controls, responsible AI)
• Experience monitoring and troubleshooting production AI agents and conversational AI systems

Required skills

• Solid hands-on experience with AWS services: Amazon Bedrock, Bedrock AgentCore, AWS Lambda, Amazon S3, DynamoDB, API Gateway, IAM, CloudWatch
• Experience with conversational analytics, agent evaluation frameworks and bot performance optimization
• Experience with AI development tools such as GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Cursor or Claude (one of them is a must)
• Preferred: AWS certifications (AI Practitioner or AI Engineer), multi-agent systems, responsible AI governance and AI security
