Legal Counsel – Financial Regulatory

About the role

The Legal Counsel will serve as the primary legal adviser for the India business of a leading global electronic market maker. Reporting locally to the CFO and functionally to the APAC General Counsel, the role supports the rapid growth of the firm’s trading activities across equities, derivatives and related services.

Key responsibilities

• Act as the main point of contact for all legal matters relating to the Indian entities.
• Partner with local leadership on legal risk, governance and execution.
• Support commercial trading initiatives, new product launches, market expansion and financing arrangements.
• Advise on technology and infrastructure agreements, including software, hardware and market data contracts.
• Handle corporate and commercial issues covering data protection, intellectual property, AI, employment, procurement and tax.
• Design local policies, governance standards and risk‑management frameworks.
• Monitor regulatory developments and work with Compliance to implement changes.
• Manage relationships with external law firms and support regulatory or contentious matters as they arise.
• Contribute to global and regional legal initiatives such as contract frameworks and policy harmonisation.

Required profile

• 7‑12 years of post‑qualification experience, preferably with a mix of private practice and in‑house roles.
• Current practising certificate in India.
• Strong working knowledge of financial services regulation applicable to market‑making and trading businesses.
• Demonstrated expertise in corporate, commercial, contractual and regulatory matters.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating with global legal teams.
• Excellent stakeholder management, communication and negotiation skills.

• Experience with data protection, intellectual property and AI‑related legal issues.
• Proficiency in drafting and negotiating commercial contracts.
