Lead Software Engineer – Ophthalmology Imaging Viewer

About the role

Emmes Group is seeking a hands‑on Lead Software Engineer to own the design, development, and delivery of a next‑generation ophthalmology imaging viewer platform. The solution will enable clinicians to review retinal images, visualize AI‑assisted findings, and manage imaging workflows that support clinical research and decision‑making.

Key responsibilities

• Define and lead the architecture of a scalable, cloud‑native ophthalmology image viewing platform.
• Establish coding standards, technical roadmaps, and microservices‑based development practices.
• Integrate AI/ML models into the viewer, ensuring explainable and auditable outputs.
• Implement DICOM and ophthalmic imaging standards, annotation, measurement, grading, and reporting features.
• Mentor and coach a team of engineers, conduct code and architectural reviews, and promote test automation, CI/CD, security, and observability.
• Manage sprint planning, backlog prioritisation, and delivery commitments while driving continuous improvement.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading software engineering teams in medical imaging or related domains.
• Strong background in cloud‑native development and microservices architecture.
• Hands‑on experience integrating AI/ML models into clinical workflows.
• Familiarity with healthcare interoperability standards, especially DICOM.
• Excellent communication skills to collaborate with product, clinical, data‑science, and QA stakeholders.
