Lab Operator – Metallography & Mechanical Testing

About the role

We are looking for a Lab Operator to join Bekaert’s metallurgical and mechanical testing team. The role supports the production of wire rod and ISC by performing routine metallography, mechanical, chemical and bath testing, as well as fracture analysis and reporting.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct metallurgical analysis of wire rod, ISC and filaments.
• Test incoming wire rod, generate rating reports and advise production.
• Perform wire fracture analysis, identify root causes and prepare detailed reports.
• Coordinate third‑party testing according to sampling plans and visit suppliers for on‑site metallography.
• Maintain heat‑wise test data, consumable stock and implement cost‑saving alternatives.
• Operate and maintain mechanical lab instruments (Instron, digital/laser micrometer, profile projector, stereoscope, wire rod straightener).
• Operate metallography lab equipment (optical microscope, system grinder, mounting press, polishing machines, stereoscope).
• Execute equipment calibrations, measurement system analysis and support IATF 16949/2016 audit preparation.
• Document procedures, CAPA actions and update SOPs as required.

Required profile

• Experience in laboratory testing of steel wire products.
• Ability to generate clear technical reports and communicate findings to production teams.
• Willingness to travel to supplier sites for on‑site testing.
• Attention to detail in data recording and inventory management.
