Extreme Heat Expert

About the role

UNEP is seeking an experienced Extreme Heat Expert to support the design and implementation of global and country‑level programs on extreme heat and sustainable cooling. The consultant will work remotely, primarily from India, and will contribute to initiatives such as the India Urban Cooling Program and the Beat the Heat Initiative.

Key responsibilities

• Provide expert insights on evaluating urban heat island effects and developing adaptation strategies for cities.
• Support the creation of policy documents, planning guidelines, and training programmes on sustainable cooling.
• Deliver technical inputs, training and support for policy dialogues and technical assessments with UNEP global teams, UNEP India Office and national ministries.
• Assist in integrating heat‑adaptation measures into sub‑national climate and urban plans and in preparing funding proposals.
• Engage with technical partners, cities and stakeholders to increase commitments on sustainable cooling.

Required profile

• Post‑graduate qualification in architecture, urban planning, environmental engineering, energy or a related field (or equivalent experience).
• Minimum 15 years of relevant experience, with a strong focus on extreme heat, cooling, urban planning and the environment.
• Demonstrated practical experience in India, including policy analysis, city engagement and urban heat island analysis.
