Drone Design and Development Engineer

About the role

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay is leading a government‑funded project to develop and demonstrate advanced drone technologies. The role focuses on designing, analysing, and testing a variety of UAV platforms to meet diverse application needs.

Key responsibilities

• Perform conceptual sizing and detailed design calculations for multi‑copter, fixed‑wing, VTOL‑hybrid, and other UAV configurations.
• Select and optimise propulsion systems using multi‑objective optimisation techniques.
• Develop and operate test rigs for vibration, stress, strain and deflection analysis of UAV structures.
• Integrate and calibrate UAV subsystems, including payloads and sensors.
• Create detailed 3D CAD models, engineering drawings and complete assemblies.
• Document design processes, test results and produce technical reports.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to ensure seamless system integration.

Required profile

• PhD or MTech/BE (or equivalent) in Mechanical, Aerospace, or related engineering discipline with relevant experience.
• Proven experience in UAV conceptual design and performance estimation.
• Strong understanding of flight physics, material strength, composites, aerodynamics and structural analysis.

Required skills

• High proficiency with SolidWorks, CATIA and other 3D CAD tools.
• Design‑for‑manufacturing approach.
• Thermal and vibration management expertise.
• Propulsion system selection and multi‑objective optimisation.
• Test rig design and execution (vibration, stress, strain, deflection).
• Detailed CAD modelling, engineering drawing production and documentation.
