Data Legal Counsel – Data Privacy & Governance (India focus)

About the role

Barclays is seeking a Data Legal Counsel to provide expert advice on data privacy and governance initiatives across India, while supporting teams in APAC, the UK, EME and the US. You will work closely with Product Legal, Country Legal, Compliance and other stakeholders to deliver commercially viable solutions that respect local nuances.

Key responsibilities

• Provide day‑to‑day advisory on data privacy and management matters in India and escalate complex issues to APAC Data Legal.
• Act as Subject Matter Expert for data privacy and governance, supporting EIP Legal, CIT Legal, Country Legal, Country Compliance and DP Compliance.
• Negotiate and respond to ad‑hoc queries on privacy policies, consent wording and new template contracts with suppliers.
• Assist external consultants in maintaining an up‑to‑date data inventory for India.
• Support the global team with Data Transfer Impact Assessments (DTIA) and review outputs for Data Subject Access Requests (DSAR).

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Law and a qualified lawyer in India with tenured experience, preferably in a global financial institution or law firm.
• Strong legal risk‑management and communication abilities, with experience handling multiple stakeholders.
• Highly motivated, proactive and capable of delivering high‑quality work independently.

Required skills

• Experience with lawful basis identification, consent management, cross‑border data transfers, regulatory requests and disclosure analyses.
• Negotiation of privacy policies, consent wording and supplier contracts.
• Familiarity with data inventory maintenance, DTIA and DSAR processes.
