BESS Electrical Lead

About the role

The Electrical Lead will head the electrical design and engineering for utility‑scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. You will ensure that every solution meets grid codes, safety standards and customer requirements from concept through commissioning.

Key responsibilities

• Lead end‑to‑end electrical design of BESS plants, including single‑line diagrams, cable sizing, grounding/earthing, protection schemes and equipment specifications (transformers, switchgear, RMUs, UPS, etc.).
• Define and validate grid‑connection requirements with utilities, covering voltage levels, fault levels, protection interfaces, metering, power quality and compliance with grid codes.
• Review and approve integration of PCS/inverters, BMS, EMS and SCADA from an electrical and protection perspective.
• Perform or supervise load‑flow, short‑circuit and protection coordination studies; support harmonic and power‑quality analyses.
• Ensure designs comply with IEC/IEEE standards, local regulations and applicable grid codes.
• Maintain internal electrical design standards, templates and checklists for BESS and grid‑connected systems.
• Define protection philosophies and interlocking schemes for safe energisation, isolation and maintenance.
• Drive design reviews (HIRA/HAZID/HAZOP) focusing on electrical safety, arc‑flash risk and functional safety.
• Provide technical guidance to internal teams and external partners, review vendor documentation and support construction, FAT/SAT and commissioning activities.

Required profile

• Act as the electrical technical authority for BESS projects, coordinating with EPCs, OEMs and consultants.
• Plan and manage electrical engineering deliverables to meet scope, quality, schedule and cost targets.
• Review vendor/OEM documentation for transformers, switchgear, protection relays, converters, cabling and auxiliary power systems.
• Support site teams with procedures, test plans and resolution of technical issues during construction and commissioning.
