Assistant Legal Counsel

About the role

The Assistant Legal Counsel will provide end‑to‑end legal support to the bank across corporate, commercial, lending, regulatory and dispute matters. The role involves drafting and vetting documentation, advising business units, mitigating legal risks and ensuring compliance with banking laws and regulatory guidelines.

Key responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive legal support across corporate, commercial, lending, regulatory and dispute matters.
• Draft, review and vet contracts, facility agreements, security documents, pledge deeds, mortgages and inter‑creditor arrangements.
• Advise business, risk, compliance, credit and operations teams on transaction structures, aligning them with the bank’s risk appetite and regulatory requirements.
• Interpret RBI Master Directions, circulars, KYC/AML rules and embed legal safeguards into new products.
• Negotiate with third‑party lawyers and resolve non‑standard documentation while protecting the bank’s interests.
• Map and monitor critical cases in courts and tribunals, prioritising high‑value and reputational risks.
• Assist senior legal leaders in policy development, compliance with bank legal policies and creation of local procedures.
• Ensure all transaction documents comply with applicable law and internal policies.

Required profile

• Law degree (LL.B/LL.M) with knowledge of Indian banking and regulatory law.
• Experience in corporate, commercial, lending, regulatory and dispute matters within a banking environment.
• Ability to work closely with business, risk, compliance, credit and operations teams.
• Strong analytical skills to interpret RBI guidelines and assess legal risks.
• Proven capability to draft and negotiate complex legal documents.
• Familiarity with litigation management and monitoring of court proceedings.
