Staff Software Engineer - Full Stack

About the role

As a Staff Full‑Stack Engineer on the Cloud Clients team, you’ll own end‑to‑end delivery across the surfaces where dbt developers do their work: dbt Studio in the browser, the dbt VS Code extension, and the CLI workspace runtime that powers both. You’ll help build dbt’s AI‑native developer experience, including agent workflows, diff review, streaming tool calls, charts and rich outputs for conversational analytics, and MCP apps that bring dbt projects directly into tools like Claude and Codex.

Key responsibilities

• Own parts of the CLI workspace runtime, migrate users off legacy IDEs and enable asynchronous, background agent runs.
• Design and build agent‑facing experiences such as streaming responses, transparent tool calls, diff review, and rich output for conversational analytics.
• Extend dbt into other developer surfaces with MCP integrations for AI clients like Claude and Codex.
• Lead well‑scoped projects end‑to‑end: plan, partner with design and product, ship in two‑week increments, and measure impact.
• Share on‑call and customer support responsibilities for your surfaces and mentor junior engineers.

Required profile

• 8+ years building production software with senior‑level ownership of multi‑person projects.
• Deep Python experience plus exposure to TypeScript and React, moving across the stack without handoffs.
• Built and maintained tools that other developers depend on (IDE, editor extension, CLI, SDK, LSP server, or data tool).
• Comfort with operational aspects: APIs, Kubernetes, PostgreSQL, observability, and being on‑call when things break.
• Strong written communication to make technical arguments and bring people along.
• Experience working asynchronously in a fully‑remote, distributed team.
