Staff Backend Engineer (Level 4)

About the role

Agoda is looking for a Staff Backend Engineer to own the design, reliability, and evolution of critical services that power its global travel platform. You will work on high‑scale, fault‑tolerant systems, collaborating across product and business teams to deliver fast, resilient solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build, and own scalable distributed systems and microservices within your domain.
• Lead development of complex features and technical initiatives end‑to‑end.
• Drive system and API design, ensuring scalability, performance, reliability and fault tolerance.
• Identify gaps and risks proactively and resolve them without waiting for direction.
• Mentor engineers, handle production incidents, and lead root‑cause analysis and improvements.

Required profile

• 8–12 years of backend engineering experience building large‑scale distributed systems.
• Proven ownership of critical services, making independent architectural decisions under ambiguity.
• Experience communicating trade‑offs to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
• Demonstrated impact mentoring and growing engineers on the team.

Required skills

• Java, Kotlin, Scala, or Go.
• Microservices architecture, REST APIs, and system design.
• SQL and NoSQL databases (e.g., Cassandra, MongoDB, Aerospike).
• Event‑driven platforms such as Kafka.
• CI/CD pipelines and cloud environments (AWS/GCP).
