Software Engineer, Backend (Python)

About the role

Plane is building an open, adaptable work‑management platform that powers organizations across regulated industries. As a Backend Software Engineer you will work on the Django services that keep live work state in sync across thousands of workspaces, both in Plane Cloud and self‑hosted deployments.

Key responsibilities

• Own backend surfaces end‑to‑end, from API contract and data model through migration and rollout.
• Extend real‑time sync paths, including event streams, change‑data‑capture and caching layers.
• Measure and improve query performance, managing indexes, query plans and connection pooling.
• Write robust async Python code that handles high concurrency and identify bottlenecks.
• Instrument services for observability and respond to alerts before customers notice issues.
• Collaborate daily with product and frontend engineers in San Francisco and Hyderabad, as well as with community contributors.

Required profile

• Delivered production‑ready Python applications; can point to a shipped project.
• Experience with Django (or comparable framework) including models, migrations and request cycle.
• Strong SQL skills: can read queries, add indexes and explain performance impact.
• Written async Python code that has handled real traffic.
• Debugged production incidents and implemented fixes.
• Clear written communication, especially in public issue threads.
