Senior Heavy Mechanical Engineer – Hydroelectric & Dams

About the role

AECOM is looking for a Senior Heavy Mechanical Engineer to lead the design, integration, and implementation of major mechanical equipment for hydroelectric power plants and dam water‑retention structures. The role involves working on new developments as well as rehabilitation and modernization projects across Canada and occasionally internationally.

Key responsibilities

• Act as the senior technical reference for heavy mechanical engineering on hydroelectric and dam projects.
• Define design criteria, perform calculations, and select equipment for gates, trash racks, lifting mechanisms, winches, overhead cranes and related systems.
• Prepare, review and approve studies, drawings, tender documents, specifications and cost estimates.
• Coordinate mechanical activities with civil, structural and electrical disciplines and integrate site survey data into designs.
• Provide technical support during construction, including shop‑drawing reviews, RFI responses, inspections and commissioning.
• Mentor junior engineers and technicians and contribute to schedule, budget and HSE compliance.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Minimum 12 years of experience designing heavy mechanical equipment for hydroelectric facilities.
• Member in good standing of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) or eligible for immediate registration.
• Ability to work independently on complex assignments and deliver sound technical recommendations.

Required skills

• Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or Revit.
• Mechanical design calculations and equipment selection for hydroelectric systems.
