About the role

The National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC) is seeking a versatile Mechatronics Engineer to lead the mechanical design, rapid prototyping, and hands‑on integration of custom robotic systems. You will work in a small, agile team that bridges academic research and commercial production, turning high‑level concepts into functional hardware.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the mechanical architecture and detailed design of bespoke robots, end‑effectors, and enclosures.
• Rapidly prototype concepts using 3D printing, CNC machining, laser cutting, and traditional fabrication methods.
• Own the full build lifecycle: assemble mechanical parts, route electrical wiring, and create reliable wire harnesses.
• Conduct hardware‑in‑the‑loop testing, bring‑up, and electronics debugging using multimeters and oscilloscopes.
• Translate ambiguous, high‑level requests into clear technical specifications and trade‑off analyses.

Required profile

• Hands‑on engineering mindset with a strong bias toward building and testing prototypes.
• Ability to balance speed and rigor, knowing when a quick proof‑of‑concept is sufficient and when a robust design is needed.
• Excellent problem‑solving skills and comfort working across mechanical, electrical, and software domains.
• Effective communication skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
