Principal HV Engineer (Rail)

About the role

Lead the technical and commercial delivery of electrical design packages for rail infrastructure, focusing on high‑voltage (HV) substations, traction power and low‑voltage (LV) systems. You will guide concept through detailed design, mentor junior staff and ensure compliance with all relevant regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage technical and commercial delivery of HV substation, traction power and LV design packages.
• Develop concept and detailed designs, including technical reports, electrical calculations and design specifications.
• Review CAD drawings and ensure thorough documentation of all design work.
• Mentor and oversee junior engineers and CAD technicians.
• Act as Lead Engineer/CRE and Checker, delivering outputs on time, within budget and to client expectations.
• Provide technical and commercial oversight, including design planning, risk management and quality assurance.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated, constructible solutions.
• Manage design packages independently throughout the full project lifecycle.

Required profile

• BE/BTech or ME/MTech in Electrical Engineering; Chartered or working towards chartership (e.g., IET) or equivalent Professional Engineer licence.
• 12+ years of experience in railway electrification and power design, with proven leadership as a checker, CRE or Lead Engineer.
• Strong understanding of international design standards such as Network Rail, BS and IEC.
• Excellent technical writing, communication and stakeholder‑engagement skills.
