Principal Engineer - Substation Secondary

About the role

We are seeking a Principal Engineer – Secondary Substation to join our Transmission & Distribution team in India. The role offers the opportunity to lead and mentor a team of Protection & Control engineers while delivering high‑voltage substation designs for global energy projects.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, mentor and develop a team of Protection & Control engineers and technical specialists.
• Develop and optimise protection and control solutions, including line diagrams, schematics, relay settings, SCADA topology, wiring diagrams and design specifications.
• Act as Owner’s Engineer, reviewing supplier designs and calculations for HV clients, including BESS and renewable projects.
• Conduct protection coordination studies and settings calculations using ETAP or similar tools.
• Coordinate across multi‑disciplinary engineering environments and support project managers.
• Prepare technical reports, bids and ensure compliance with AECOM and client design management processes.
• Drive innovation in AI, digital automation, scripts and dynamic/transient modelling.
• Perform quality‑control reviews of calculations and drawings and contribute to engineering budgets and schedules.

Required profile

• Master of Engineering (or equivalent) in an engineering discipline.
• 12–15 years of experience in high‑voltage plant and substation design.
• Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Professional Engineer (PE) licence or equivalent.
• Proven experience leading large design teams in a global consultancy.
• Extensive experience with HV plant design for EHV grid sub‑stations (132 kV‑400 kV).
• Experience preparing protection and control scheme drawings, relay coordination, SCADA and communication protocols.
• Familiarity with international standards such as IEEE, IEC, ANSI and regional codes.
• Experience with GIS and AIS based secondary design of EHV substations.
