Principal Engineer - Protection & Control

About the role

WSP is seeking a senior technical leader to deliver power system Protection & Control engineering for transmission, distribution and renewable projects, primarily in the US market. The Principal Engineer will act as the lead on design packages, coordinate multidisciplinary teams and mentor junior staff.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare proposals, conceptual designs and execution plans for projects ranging from 11 kV to 400 kV.
• Lead the production of detailed sub‑station P&C design packages compliant with IEC/IEEE and client standards.
• Generate engineering cost, man‑hour estimates and project schedules.
• Develop protection and control schematics, relay one‑line diagrams, wiring diagrams, SCADA architecture and cable schedules.
• Perform engineering studies such as voltage‑drop analysis and AC/DC load studies.
• Coordinate design activities with civil, structural and physical engineering teams.
• Provide guidance, mentorship and quality checks for junior engineers.
• Drive a ‘Safety by Design’ approach and contribute to process and tool improvements.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
• 12–15 years of experience in sub‑station transmission & distribution, on‑shore/off‑shore wind or solar projects.
• Familiarity with National Grid Technical Specification, Technical Guidance Notes and Design Handbooks (UK).
• Membership in a professional engineering institution (e.g., IET, CIGRE, IEEE) is preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to work analytically.

Required skills

• Protection & Control system design (relay one‑line, schematics, wiring diagrams).
• SCADA architecture and IEC 61850 sub‑station automation knowledge.
• Voltage‑drop analysis, AC/DC load studies, equipment specification development.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD and E‑TAP software.
• Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
