Principal Engineer, Frontend

About the role

Plane is building a real‑time, local‑first work management platform. As a Principal Engineer, Frontend you will own the client‑side of the product, including dense views, collaborative editors, offline sync and the design system.

Key responsibilities

• Take Plane’s frontend to real‑time and local‑first across work items, boards, documents and other core surfaces.
• Own client‑side state, synchronization, caching, offline behavior and conflict resolution.
• Drive frontend performance in large workspaces, optimizing rendering, memory usage, load times and interaction latency.
• Set architecture and engineering standards, reviewing high‑risk designs and implementations.

Required profile

• 10+ years of software engineering experience with React, TypeScript and large‑scale frontend architecture.
• Proven experience building real‑time applications using WebSockets, subscriptions or event‑driven patterns.
• Hands‑on experience with local‑first challenges such as client‑side persistence, synchronization, caching and offline behavior.

• React, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, MobX, React Router.
• WebSockets, IndexedDB, Service Workers, client‑side synchronization, ProseMirror.
• Electron, Vite, Rolldown, internal component libraries.
• Python/Django, Golang, PostgreSQL, Redis, REST/GraphQL, Datadog, Sentry.
