Patient Care Assistant – Pulmonary Unit

About the role

The Patient Care Assistant on the Pulmonary Unit provides direct patient care, assisting registered nurses with hands‑on tasks, activities of daily living and technical duties for a group of patients under the supervision of a Team Leader. The role may also include sitter responsibilities for patients requiring full‑time supervision.

Key responsibilities

• Take and record vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight, height, intake‑output).
• Assist patients with ambulation, transfers, positioning, and use of wheelchairs.
• Provide ADL support such as bed baths, oral hygiene, dressing, and linen changes.
• Manage nutritional needs, distribute meals, and assist with feeding.
• Empty and clean drains, catheters, urine bags, bedpans and record outputs.
• Collect specimens (urine, stool, sputum) and perform phlebotomy and EKG as trained.
• Set up and monitor oxygen and suction equipment, ensure proper function.
• Respond promptly to call lights, report changes to RN, and maintain a clean patient environment.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED (or equivalent experience).
• No prior experience required.
• Current CPR certification.
