Patient Care Assistant – Neuroscience Unit

About the role

The Patient Care Assistant provides direct bedside care to patients in the Neuroscience Unit of Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. Working under the supervision of a Team Leader and registered nurses, the assistant supports daily activities, monitors vital signs, and ensures a safe, comfortable environment for patients.

Key responsibilities

• Measure and record temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight, height, and intake‑output.
• Encourage patients to turn, cough, use incentive spirometry, and perform deep‑breathing exercises as ordered.
• Assist patients with ambulation, transfers, wheelchair use, and transportation.
• Provide personal care including bed baths, oral hygiene, dressing, linen changes, and bedside cleaning.
• Manage drainage systems, urine bags, bedpans, and record fluid output.
• Maintain a safe environment by reporting equipment issues and handling supplies appropriately.
• Perform specialized tasks such as phlebotomy, EKG acquisition, specimen collection, and ostomy bag care when trained.
• Respond promptly to call lights and patient requests.

Required profile

• Ability to work closely with registered nurses and follow the Team Leader’s direction.
• Willingness to serve as a sitter for patients requiring continuous supervision.
• Strong attention to detail for accurate documentation of vital signs and intake‑output.
• Physical capability to assist with patient positioning, lifting, and transfers.

Required skills

• Phlebotomy (trained)
• Electrocardiogram (EKG) acquisition (trained)
