Legal Officer

About the role

The Legal Officer will lead the management of litigation matters for a life insurance company, ensuring effective representation, regulatory compliance and risk mitigation across courts, tribunals and consumer forums.

Key responsibilities

• Handle and monitor all litigation matters, including consumer disputes, civil suits, criminal complaints, arbitrations and regulatory proceedings.
• Liaise with external advocates and law firms, brief them on case facts, review pleadings and track case progress.
• Prepare, vet and approve legal documents such as replies, affidavits, written statements, appeals and petitions.
• Represent the company before consumer forums, insurance ombudsman, district/state/national commissions and courts.
• Maintain a centralized litigation tracker and MIS, reporting high‑risk matters and critical dates.
• Provide legal opinions on claims repudiation, fraud, policy interpretation and dispute‑resolution strategies.
• Advise business, claims and operations teams on litigation risk and preventive measures.
• Ensure compliance with IRDAI regulations and support regulatory audits and inspections.
• Manage documentation, archival of case files and track limitation periods.

Required profile

• LL.B. from a recognized university (LL.M. preferred but not mandatory).
• 4–8 years of post‑qualification experience, preferably in life insurance, BFSI or financial services litigation.
• Strong knowledge of insurance laws, contract law, consumer protection laws and civil/criminal procedures.
