Equipment Operator I

About the role

The Equipment Operator I is an entry‑level position within the City of Winooski Public Works Department. The role focuses on supporting the maintenance of municipal infrastructure such as streets, water, sewer, storm‑water systems, sidewalks, facilities, and grounds. Operators work outdoors and collaborate with senior staff to keep the city’s assets in good condition.

Key responsibilities

• Perform general labor tasks associated with the upkeep of city infrastructure.
• Operate a variety of municipal vehicles and equipment that do not require a Commercial Driver’s License.
• Assist in the maintenance of streets, water and sewer lines, storm‑water channels, sidewalks, and public facilities.
• Follow safety protocols and report any equipment issues or hazards.
• Support senior operators and crew members in larger projects and emergency response activities.

Required profile

• Entry‑level candidate with a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
• Basic math skills and the ability to read simple technical drawings or work orders.
• Strong communication skills and a willingness to follow directions.

Required skills

• Operation of non‑CDL municipal vehicles and equipment.
• Use of hand tools and basic maintenance equipment.
• Understanding of workplace safety procedures and personal protective equipment.
