Embedded Software Architect

About the role

Philips is seeking an experienced Embedded Software Architect to lead the technical architecture of regulated medical device software within the Sleep & Respiratory Care portfolio. The role combines hands‑on design, risk mitigation, mentorship, and representation of software architecture in cross‑functional and regulatory forums.

Key responsibilities

• Define, document and govern software architecture for therapy devices, ventilators and connected‑care platforms, producing artefacts such as SAD, SDD and interface specifications.
• Lead design reviews, technical risk assessments and trade‑off analyses, ensuring decisions are recorded with clear rationale.
• Ensure compliance with IEC 62304, ISO 13485, ISO 14971 and applicable EU MDR/FDA requirements, maintaining end‑to‑end traceability.
• Embed secure‑by‑design principles, conduct threat modelling and support vulnerability remediation.
• Partner with engineering managers on feasibility, effort estimation and resource planning, and provide technical input to release planning.
• Mentor engineers, drive knowledge transfer, and champion engineering excellence and AI‑assisted tools.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electronics, Electrical Engineering or related field.
• 10+ years of embedded software development with at least 5 years in an architect or lead‑architect role.
• Proven experience delivering regulated medical device software (or other safety‑critical domains).
• Strong communication skills and ability to influence cross‑functional stakeholders without direct authority.

Required skills

• Deep expertise in C++, C, Embedded C and real‑time, resource‑constrained design.
• RTOS concepts, scheduling, concurrency, memory and power optimisation.
• Microcontroller/SoC platforms (ARM Cortex‑M, STM32), board bring‑up and hardware‑software integration.
• Communication protocols: BLE/Bluetooth, cellular/modem, UART, SPI, I2C, secure firmware update mechanisms.
• Software architecture practices: modelling, design patterns, modularity, interface design.
• Verification fundamentals: unit testing, static analysis, code coverage, test automation, CI/CD (ADO, GitHub).
• Embedded cybersecurity: threat modelling, cryptography basics, secure boot, signed updates.
