Director of Engineering

About the role

At Databricks we enable data teams to solve the world’s toughest problems by building the world’s best data and AI infrastructure platform. In this role you will work closely with leaders across engineering, product, field engineering, recruiting and HR, leading critical initiatives that enhance developer productivity and drive innovation in the developer platform space. You will be at the forefront of integrating AI tools into the developer workflow, shaping the future of AI‑assisted development.

Key responsibilities

• Solve real business needs at large scale by applying software engineering expertise.
• Ensure consistent delivery against milestones and align closely with product leadership.
• Evolve organizational structure to support long‑term initiatives and build strong, communicative teams.
• Manage technical debt and make long‑term architecture decisions while balancing the product roadmap.
• Lead and participate in technical, product, and design discussions.
• Build, manage, and operate highly scalable cloud services.
• Grow leaders on the team through coaching, mentorship, and growth opportunities.
• Partner with engineering and product leaders on planning, prioritization, and staffing.
• Create a culture of excellence while leading with empathy.

Required profile

• 15+ years of experience building and supporting large‑scale distributed systems.
• Proven ability to build, grow, and manage high‑performance engineering teams.
• Capability to attract and hire engineers who meet Databricks hiring principles.
• Experience building and running cloud platforms or demonstrated ability to quickly learn new SaaS concepts.
• Cross‑functional experience working with product management and directly with customers.
• BS in Computer Science or a Masters/PhD in a related field.
