Design Engineer – Traction Gear Box

About the role

Siemens Mobility is seeking a Design Engineer to develop and support traction gear box systems for railway applications such as locomotives, EMUs and metros. The role is part of the mechanical engineering team and focuses on creating safe, robust and manufacturable designs that meet demanding railway operating conditions.

Key responsibilities

• Design mechanical components and assemblies for traction gear boxes used in railway platforms.
• Develop robust designs that address shock, vibration, temperature variation, lubrication and long‑life durability.
• Prepare and maintain 3D models, manufacturing and assembly drawings, calculations and technical documentation.
• Perform gear design checks, bearing selection, shaft and housing assessment, tolerance stack‑up analysis and design verification.
• Select appropriate materials, manufacturing processes and surface treatments to ensure reliability.
• Support prototype development, first‑article inspection, supplier assessment and validation testing.
• Collaborate with electrical, vehicle integration, manufacturing, quality, procurement and service teams.
• Participate in design reviews, customer discussions, cost optimisation and engineering change implementation.

Required profile

• Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• Experience designing gear box components for railway or heavy‑industry applications.
• Ability to work in cross‑functional teams and manage technical issues during product introduction.
