BESS Lead – Utility‑Scale Battery Energy Storage

About the role

AECOM is seeking a BESS Lead to oversee the delivery, risk mitigation, and integration of utility‑scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across multiple technical domains. The role involves technical governance, coordination with OEMs and EPC contractors, and ensuring compliance with safety and grid standards.

Key responsibilities

• Review overall BESS delivery progress and monitor risk mitigation across battery containers, PCS, MV systems, auxiliary equipment, fire suppression, EMS/BMS/SCADA interfaces, and grid integration.
• Provide technical governance on battery safety, OEM compliance, warranty obligations, performance guarantees, testing requirements, and asset availability.
• Coordinate integration dependencies between BESS, renewable generation assets, transmission infrastructure, communication networks, and energization schedules.
• Support commissioning strategies, performance test criteria, acceptance procedures, and HOTO readiness.
• Lead governance reviews for major technical decisions and present consolidated risk, opportunity, and recommendation reports to senior leadership.

Required profile

• 15+ years of experience in power, renewable energy, transmission, or energy storage projects.
• Minimum 5 years of direct experience with utility‑scale BESS projects, covering design through operational handover.
• Proven ability to manage interfaces among OEMs, EPC contractors, utilities, and grid operators.
• Familiarity with international standards for battery safety, grid compliance, and energy storage.
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Power Systems, Renewable Energy or related field; Master’s preferred.
