Legal Counsel – Retail Banking (Mumbai)

About the role

The Legal Counsel – Retail Banking will lead legal operations for the Retail Banking division, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and internal policies. Based in Mumbai, the role sits within the Corporate Services function and supports litigation, investigations, and the closure of banking transactions.

Key responsibilities

• Implement departmental policies, processes, and procedures for consistent legal operations.
• Draft and manage legal documentation such as letters, meeting minutes, memos, charts, tables, and graphs.
• Provide legal support to internal client groups to facilitate timely transaction closures.
• Execute day‑to‑day legal operations in line with established standards.
• Monitor and manage legal costs within the approved budget.
• Maintain and develop legal MIS, documenting interventions and defended matters.
• Assist in updating legal manuals and procedures for the Retail Banking group.
• Conduct research on legal records and precedents to ensure timely data availability.
• Stay updated on legislative changes and communicate key updates to senior team members.
• Ensure proper storage and easy retrieval of all legal documents.
• Review legal journals and court circulars to share relevant updates.
• Recommend process and policy improvements to enhance operational efficiency and customer service.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) – mandatory.
• Master’s degree in Law (LLM) or related field – preferred.
• Minimum 7 years of legal experience in banking or financial services.
• Proven track record in litigation, legal documentation, and regulatory compliance.
