Staff Engineer

About the role

ANZ is looking for a Staff Engineer to shape technical strategy and delivery for high‑impact platforms within the NZ domain. As a senior individual contributor, you will influence multiple engineering squads, design resilient systems, and champion engineering best practices.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and participate in design discussions and decision‑making forums across squads.
• Provide hands‑on technical leadership, write high‑quality code, and review critical pull requests.
• Analyze system performance, reliability, scalability, and security, identifying risks early.
• Partner with engineering leads to estimate, plan, and deliver long‑range initiatives across workstreams.
• Drive technical roadmaps, manage technical debt, and prioritize modernization efforts.
• Host technical workshops, knowledge‑sharing sessions, and design guilds to raise engineering maturity.
• Participate in incident reviews, root‑cause analysis, and remediation of systemic issues.

Required profile

• Senior individual contributor with broad influence across multiple squads.
• Recognised technical authority capable of guiding solution architecture.
• Strong systems thinking and stakeholder management skills.
• Experience designing scalable, resilient, compliant, and cost‑effective systems.
• Ability to mentor senior engineers and build capability across teams.
