Senior Legal Counsel – India Campus Initiative

About the role

Emeritus is establishing premier college campuses across India and seeks a Senior Legal Counsel to lead the legal workstream for this strategic initiative. Reporting to the Global General Counsel and the Regional General Counsel, India, you will operate remotely from India and work at the intersection of education, law, compliance, and UGC regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the legal team for the India Campus initiative, managing end‑to‑end contract execution and compliance for multiple physical campuses.
• Draft, review, and negotiate contracts with students, faculty, partners, and vendors.
• Address student‑related legal issues and ensure compliance for international campus projects in India.
• Prepare and update standard form agreements in collaboration with Global General Counsel and Head of Legal, India.
• Partner with the Privacy Team to interpret and apply privacy laws affecting the campuses.
• Train internal stakeholders on contracting and compliance processes.
• Collaborate with HR, Finance, and other functions on intercompany transactions.
• Maintain high‑quality documentation and communication across diverse time zones.

Required profile

• 7‑10 years of in‑house legal experience, preferably in higher education or ed‑tech.
• Deep knowledge of University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations for foreign university campuses in India.
• Proven ability to work with globally distributed teams and external stakeholders across time zones.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of translating legal concepts for non‑legal audiences.
• High sense of urgency, strong attention to detail, and solid project‑management capabilities.
